System Office of the CGIAR

THE GENDER AND DIVERSITY PROGRAM is a systemwide service to the 15 CGIAR Centers set up to support centers' own efforts in gender and diversity - with knowledge and information, training and skills development, and technical expertise. G&D is organized for continuous consultation and communication with all key bodies of the organization.

The Advisory Group that governs the program consists of a cross-section of stakeholders, including directors general, deputy director generals, board chairs, the secretariat (World Bank), donors, national research services and both internationally- and nationally-recruited staff members. Advisory Group members have overall responsibility for ensuring that the program is of high quality, responds to the needs and priorities of the Centers, builds on cutting-edge knowledge and experience, and is run efficiently and responsibly with a view to delivering maximum impact. The current Chair of the G&D Advisory Group is Dr Dennis Garrity, Director General of the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF). Day-to-day management of the program is the responsibility of the Program Director, Vicki Wilde.

The Program has about 200 Gender & Diversity Associates (GDAs), with representatives in all CGIAR Centers. This system of GDAs supports dialogue and active consultation between G&D and staff members from all categories, including senior managers; human resource managers; scientists and non-scientists; both internationally-recruited and nationally-recruited. The role of the GDAs is one of advocacy, information dissemination, communication and facilitation of center-level gender and diversity activities. GDAs also have priority to participate in G&D conferences and workshops, thus building internal expertise and skills on gender and diversity work.

With a view to ensuring that the Gender and Diversity Program works within the challenging realities of the CGIAR Centers, it was decided that it must be hosted by a center in a developing country. In 1998 several centers submitted proposals offering to host G&D, with the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) selected as the winner. ICRAF provides the legal and administrative home for G&D at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, providing office space, housing, transport and use of center facilities.
